PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
James Tuchscher joined the firm in February of 2008. He has a Bachelor
of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University Long
Beach. He is a member of the Structural Engineering Association of Southern
California, the American Institute for Steel Construction, and is a
California registered E.I.T.
He specializes in a wide range of engineering applications including:
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
Custom Homes:
James has designed every type of custom home from modern
to
Mediterranean, using everything from conventional timber framing to
reinforced concrete, masonry, and steel materials.
Remodels and Additions:
Whether the client wants to add a second story, put in
a new deck,
add a laundry room, put in bigger windows, take down
walls, add retaining walls,
or anything else he or she can imagine, James can provide
the appropriate engineering design.
Commercial Buildings:
James has designed various commercial buildings from strip
malls to night clubs.
Seismic Retrofits:
James has experience in designing all types of retrofits from “soft
story” apartment buildings to giving a homeowner greater piece of mind
with older homes.
Fire Restorations:
James believes the tragedy of a fire does not stop once the flames
are put out. Often it continues until the displaced home or
property owner can move back in. James prides himself on
delivering quick and accurate solutions to get the owner moved
back in.
FOUNDATION REPAIR
With expansive soils, large areas of fill, poor drainage, landslide
areas, and so forth, living in southern California often has the tradeoff
of having foundation distress issues. As such, James has designed numerous
foundation repairs utilizing everything from deepened footings to caissons
and grade beams to helical anchors.
CIVIL PLANS
James routinely provides grading plans, grading calculations, drainage
plans, hydrology calculations, and erosion control plans for all of the
client’s civil needs.
FORENSIC INVESTIGATION
Palos Verdes Engineering has many tools to aid in structural forensic
investigations. In addition to standard forensic investigation practices,
James performs manometer floor level surveys, digital moisture content
surveys, digital level and laser deflections surveys.
LITIGATION PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION
James has provided litigation assistance in numerous court cases. His
services have included 3D seismic dynamic analysis and presentation, 3D
animation, exhibit design, and deposition review.
GREEN BUILDING AND LEED CERTIFICATION
James is at the forefront of green building design. He is on the Structural
Engineering Association of California’s Sustainable Design Committee and
James was the structural project manager of the first residence to receive
a building permit under the City of Los Angeles’ Mansionization Green
Building Ordinance.
